This is bizzare, what the hell does Grasso have to offer the Marxist FARC in Colombia..........Hmm, maybe some hot IPO shares?<g>

2138 GMT, 990626 Columbia – NYSE President Richard Grasso
met with Manuel Marulanda, leader of Colombia's Marxist rebel
group, on June 26. Grasso flew into a demilitarized portion of
southern Colombian jungle to visit the Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia (FARC) leader, accompanied by Finance Minister Juan
Camilo Restrepo and Victor Ricardo, the chief governmental peace
negotiator. The purpose of Grasso's visit was to discuss foreign
investment in the country and ascertain what roles U.S. business
might play there in the future. Negotiations for peace between FARC
and the Colombian government will begin in earnest next week.

Re: ...although in the States most people would not consider Moroccans and Turks to be of a different race, anymore than Slavs or Letts...

Precisely! And that's what my zinger is all about:

Americans are racist people who nurse their racism whereas Europeans are repressed xenophobes

Now, remember the mismatch it's hinting at: the US are plagued by the color line, that is most socioeconomic prejudices come down to the black/white deadlock, whereas Europe's xenophobia goes beyond. As white as Turks, Moroccans or Albanians might be, they don't truly belong to the ''family''.... An obvious explanation to such a narrow-mindedness is to be found in History: Europe's never considered herself as an immigrant receptacle. Hence the current seniority bias that breaks down the European citizenship into several low-grade subvarieties (a stealth apartheid)....

Gustave.
