>> I think Castlewood will have trouble with ORB as both ORB and JAZ are niche products. SR <<

That's OK. Castlewood is a small company with low overhead. They don't have to sell as many Orbs as Iomega has to sell Jaz to make money. Iomega is a bloated company, which is why they have had to have layoff after layoff.

A niche market is OK for a smaller company like Castlewood. However, it's disastor for a mismanaged company with too much overhead like Iomega.

Earthshaking New Sanyo Products-IBM Microdrive-Compatible!

steves-digicams.com

Sanyo has introduced two new Earthshattering products- a CD-R standalone recorder, AND a low-cost digital camera-- both can take CompactFlash type II slots- meaning they can accept IBM's new Microdrive!

About the CD-R recorder : "...Java-based CD-R device with a CF slot (TYPE II. Microdrive support), Smartmedia slot, Video and Audio output and a printer port. A PC is not required when it works. You can burn the image with sound to CD-R from CF/SM and display to TV or print it out to color printer. "

About the digital camera: ...1.5 Megapixel progressive CCD with 1360x1024 resolution, also does 640x480 motion picture with voice. Uses CompactFlash with a Type II slot (Microdrive supported) and has a builtin speaker.

Notes: this brand new camera is only 1.5 megapixel, so the price is probably very low. This should be definitely the lowest-priced camera with a CF TypeII interface so far. Also notice that a PCMCIA type II interface (that Flop! needs) is NOT included in either of these brand new revolutionary products... besides laptops, this interface is clearly dead in new portable digital products.

>>Rocky, when was the tie ratio 7 ? <<

My, my. How short memories are around here. In January 1998, the following post documents highlights from the infamous 1/22/98 Conference Call with KE. Among the items: 12 Million Zip drives sold 100 Million Zip disks = over 8 disks per drive. KE also warned in that CC tie ratios were falling, and they would advertise to try and prop up the tie ratio (remember the Super Bowl ad anyone?)

Message 3236679

Last Summer, I warned people here that tie ratios had fallen to under 7.

Now it's fallen to 6. Zip tie ratios are continuing to fall. Please feel free to re-read the posts from the era of the above link. It makes for fascinating reading. Virtually NONE of the Iomaniac's predictions of that time have come true. = Zero credibility.
