"Can you exchange disks with someone else and can you be sure it will play on another machine?".

For many applications, you are correct. The Zip and Jaz are presently more prevalent. On the other hand, how many PC's have Jaz or Zip drives? Maybe 5% at best. Therefore, the probability of finding another person's PC with Jaz or Zip is only 1 in 20.

That's why I really appreciate the external models which allow use on other and anybody's PC. It takes 15 minutes to install the software and plug the connector cables to get someone else's PC ready for Jaz, Zip, or Orb.

For most application of data backup and permanent storage, it is done locally. It doesn't make any difference if Orb or Jaz or Zip or CD-RW is used. It is also more convenient to transfer or send files electronically to another PC (i.e. by lanmails or emails), instead of hand carrying the disks to another PC location.

As far as utility, it makes no difference whether one has an Orb, a Jaz, or a Zip. The big difference is the cost and value.
