I was talking about serious crimes--you know, a couple of them are from the Ten Commandments, like stealing and murdering people. These were crimes in colonial America; they are crimes now. Terrence was saying something like almost everything might become a crime, and that is not logical.

You could make a silly list of recent civil offenses or minor crimes that are now illegal but which didn't used to be, but then I could make a similar list of petty crimes which used to be illegal and are anachronisms now. Actually, lots of these, like the sodomy laws, are even still on the books in some places, but are not enforced.

So exactly what is your point?

Michael, it's not a crime to say a prayer at school.

You can pray all you like, as long as you don't insist that your classmates pray along with you. The who-shot-John these days is over the question of whether to permit organized group prayer in public schools.
