Greg,

I agree. I take 155 to be 55% more than 100. I didn't pay much attention to the details until you questioned them. I understand Plaz's explanation (and it makes sense), but I also agree on your rebuttal.

If I claim p percent more than x, the p refers to x, not my totals.

That said, it's not clear to me which number is erroneous or misstated.

Jason, are you reading? Could you clarify? Did V3 sell more than double either of the two named TNT2 board lines or is the 44% across the board number incorrect? Maybe the 44% includes all V3?

Nothing else to do, but nitpick on a slow day. :)

So why wouldn't they say "122% more than diamond" and "809% more than creative labs"?

If they did it that way, then the diamond number would have been relative to diamond's sales and the creative number relative to creative's sales. They wouldn't have the same "base" and someone else could argue that they're not consistent. At least this way, both percents are relative to 3dfx's sales.

I hate the whole % better than issue because I've seen it done so many different ways that you never know what you are getting unless you analyze it (and many times you don't even have enough data to do that). Like I said before: most people use whichever base makes them look better.

When I optimize code, I tell my boss "it runs 2.44 times faster than it did before." At least that's specific and there's no ambiguity!

:-)

Back on topic, these numbers are great! In fact, these numbers are so good that I'll predict that 3dfx does OK next month. They may lose the #1 spot to diamond, but it won't be by a blowout and they should be there for #2 and #3. Don't forget that:

1. TNT2 quantities are still limited while V3 seems to be well in stock.
2. V3 is $50 cheaper.
3. TNT2 is AGP only. There's a lot of PCI systems out there that people are still upgrading.
4. Great branding.

Now, if 3dfx could just have the same success with OEMs...
