SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Yahoo is testing an online banking service with BankAmerica Corp. that would allow Yahoo users to conduct business with the largest U.S. bank.

The service is only being tested with certain Yahoo (YHOO: news, msgs) users and right now only allows customers to view their account balances with the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank (BAC: news, msgs).

"We're just conducting some testing and we don't really have any more announcements to make at this time," said Jeff Hershberger, spokesman for BankAmerica. Yahoo officials couldn't be reached for comment.

The tests are the latest attempt by large banks to hook up with mainstream Internet consumer portals such Yahoo. ExciteatHome, for example, is working with BancOne while Citicorp is working with Netscape's (AOL: news, msgs) Netcenter portal Earlier this month, Chase Manhattan Corp. (CMB: news, msgs) announced an Internet initiative.

The Yahoo service, located in the portal's My Yahoo area, requires users to enter an additional password for security purposes.

Yahoo shares rose 9 5/8 Monday to 156 1/2. BankAmerica shares rose 1 1/8 to 71 1/2.
