I'm no fan of Nvidia but even I will admit that the TNT2 boards were very late in getting into their retail outlets so I don't think the poor showing in the PC Data May numbers necesarily mean anything. The month plus lead 3dfx had with Voodoo3 most likely sucked up much of the excess demand out there. (3dfx take note again when preparing to introduce the next gen part!)

Only this past weekend have I seen a non-Diamond or Creative TNT2.

I expect that the TNT2 Ultra boards will be reasonably successful since the high end gamers will be willing to pay the huge premium that the boardmakers are charging. However, the price asked for the generic TNT2 based boards is still way too high compared to the Voodoo3 boards which is why you have already seen discounting of up to 20% from original suggested retail and Nvidia is rationing TNT2 Ultra chips to those who will also buy the TNT2.

The key figures that need to be looked at this upcoming quarter is the difference in margins between 3dfx, Diamond, Creative, and ATI. Hopefully, the merger costs will not distort the 3dfx financials too much.
