I'd love to hear opinions from as many as possible.

I don't think SI offers lifetime memberships any longer. If you go to the sign up part, it is $60 for a semi annual membership. That is a bit steep for the wit and wisdom on the threads of SI IMO. <grin>

The payment of a moderate lifetime fee was worth it to me to get away from the noise of the m.i.s. stocks newsgroups plus SI had already signed up more than a few of my friends.

I guess lurkers will just have to figure out if it is worth it to them. If anyone has a burning desire to say something, just sign up for one of those 14 day free trials and then cancel it until next time you get the urge if the $10/month is too steep.

The only other way I see of allowing the lurkers to have a voice is for someone to moderate and repost messages sent to a cutout mailbox. I use these to eliminate spam. iname.com has free e-mail which you can automatically forward to another mailbox. If it gets corrupted with junk e-mail, you just kill it and get another.

For my part, life it too short to start following various threads on other bulletin boards ala Raging Bull, or Motley Fool. I doubt if I would participate if this thread moved to a "free" site.

Dave

PS for lurkers. If you really think that $10/month is too steep, you might consider that within the company threads on SI there are quite a few employees of those companies. If you are really digging down for information that they see within their respective companies, SI is worth every penny.

Hi Tom, I recently got two of my RedNecks signed up on the life time membership. Here is a post from Brad.

Date: Friday, March 05, 1999 2:40 PM
Subject: Re: Life time Membership

it's $200. Thanks for recruiting! Would you like some free SI T-Shirts?

Brad

If you would like I will check with him and verify that it is still available.

As for moving Camp, I try to keep my options open but really like it here. The BB is worth the $200 by itself. It took me over a year to stumble on to the AIM BB on SI. So moving would be like going to another planet and then trying to find a tribe that I could get along with. I'm sure there are quality tribes on the other Chat Planets, but I feel the charge for entry here keeps the streets somewhat clean.

As Dave stated about the e-mail, I feel that the best option is to supplement what we already have. Like your Old Cat, Robert's Web page and Dave's CA Web site. Another item I have found to be useful is the ICQ communication service. FWIW

Keith

Tom...im a cheap scottish type when it comes to paying fees on the internet...i lurked for months before i decided that it was worth the fee...then i was using it for the aiq site that Bruce Bowman was active on...i have visited only the Gary B Smith techn analysis site on yahoo and even spent a month at their evening chatroom.. as an ole fart, the chat room reminded me of junior high and was a waste of time...i to noticed an increase of junk mail after posting there...i think the fee for si was $125 one time and i feel it was worth it...i only look at couple sites beside aim and you guys have got me to look at some of the stock sites...but a lot of that = name calling ie like the chat rooms on yahoo...i would not be for moving unles something happened here like on P... as i suspect it would change about the time we moved...bj

Is there any desire to make a shift again to yet another location?

Absolutely not Tom! I hope no one misconstrued our idea on the PCA User's Group. This is and will always be the main AIM forum. What we are really shooting for is to offer some value-added resources for our users, and allow them to interact if they wish without having to join SI for the occasional question or post. Our user group will be mainly focused on stock screening and research tools when it's finished.

This thread is actually linked on our message page,
net-magic.net , in a read-only fashion. I'm sure we have brought a ton of lurkers here in the past year, but seldom see a lot of new faces. We're just trying to help make sure this thread stays mostly on-topic. I can imagine what you all would say to me if 1,000 people started asking PCA software related questions in here when we release the new product :)

I like SI a lot, and hope they exercise restraint on the new ads. When I joined, the lifetime membership was $150, and was 1 week away from going to $200. I didn't get a t-shirt either!

Anyway, once and for all, we should agree that SI is the perfect place for the main AIM thread and I don't want to dilute it at all. We just want to offer our users a place to post what might be considered off-topic here. Plus, I like having a place where I can let my mind run amok without aggravating all you good folks!

Best Regards,
Bill

Tom, I feel very comfortable here on SI; even more so than when we were all on P*. Yahoo is a possible option, but there is a lot of junk posting going on there. I'm one of the lucky ones who got here before any fee was required, however.

Sincerely,
RFH
