People are influenced by such things as laws. We are telling them that it is no big deal to get rid of an pregnancy, through the persistence of a liberal abortion regime. Even with other cultural signals, the very fact that it is treated as just another medical procedure in law undermines a sense of gravity about the situation. Similarly, making it illegal would buttress cultural signals about the deep responsibility of parenthood, and the sacredness of human life. Anyway, your response shows a few misunderstandings... 1.) You seem to think that you have scored off of me by observing that there would always be regretful mothers. The point is that it makes things worse if their sense of responsibility is undermined; 2.) A mother who wanted an abortion but couldn't get it is unlikely to suddenly view parenthood as a sacred obligation simply because there is no legal avenue for escape. Since I had been discussing women who voluntarily brought the child to term, this is not quite on point; 3.) Since I am merely trying to establish a basis for asserting causality between a liberal abortion regime and an increase in child abuse, I need only weaken the obvious counter- argument, which is the assumption that "unwantedness" would lead to abuse, so that it cannot be used to trump the asserted link. Obviously, one could go back and forth a great deal; 4.) Actually, since the theory that "racial identity" is paramount has gained currency, there are impediments to cross- racial adoption, and I have known people who have tried. In any case, you have brought up another option for those who will not or cannot take responsibility for their children, which is orphanages, which I believe would be preferable to abortion; 5.) I would be happy to see the stigma of unmarried pregnancy reduced or eliminated, if it would reduce the incidence of abortion; 6.) There is no self- conscious assessment, it is just that the reduction of motive affects behavior, and encourages laxity. It is, in fact, a well- known phenomenon in the insurance industry...
