You may be right about abortion and abuse. I suppose it is possible that many people cannot keep permissive abortion laws (and the attendant theory of the disposability of a child in the womb) from intruding on to their attitude toward already born children. This attitude would be unconscious and I am not sure how one would measure it, if it exists.

I happen to agree that abortion is a big deal- but it should be legal in the first 3 months - NOT because it isn't murder, and not because it isn't a bad thing to do, but because it is the best alternative amongst a host of nasty options.

Another reason for child abuse to increase under liberal regimes is mere permissiveness alone- permissiveness to be unusual, permissiveness to deviate from accepted behaviors. When people are under tighter strictures, when deviation from cultural norms is penalized by ostracism, there is less of all sorts of societally detrimental behaviors. There is also less creativity and personal fulfillment. Again, a point of balance must be found between letting everyone- no matter how deviant and dangerous to society- be all they want to be and the other extreme of forcing everyone to conform to a rigid standard that stifles all but the most limited and rigid individuals.

Au contrarie, my friend.

Before the legalization of abortions in the U.S. many women who had the money fled to European clinics to have it "taken care of" and others less well-off resorted to the back street surgeons -- some to coat hangers in alleys. This, because a woman's right to her own bodies was not recognized, even though it is a basic right.

You know not that of which you speak...

It amazes me that grown men who can know nothing experiential about motherhood or pregnancy can speculate so wildly on the subject. It distresses me that men think they have anything worth reading to say about the question.
