Jatin,

"...upgrading switch and host software simultaneously. And believe me, it is a very complex process as each release depends on the other."

That's precisely my point. And thanks for those views, but I was very clearly NOT suggesting that the programmables and the more polular Class 5s were of the same architecural class. The DMSs and 5Es are far more rigid, as your referenced point above makes clear.

My main point is fostered by the fact that they "are" different, and that the smaller and more nimble platforms, particularly for use by IXCs and certain emerging CLECs/ITSPs [Internet Telephony Service Providers] entering the enterprise level local exchange markets, is the preferred way to go. It allows them to create a diffuse, rather than a highly concentrated, mode of presence over a single or multiple serving territories in a manner which is less risky and just in time.

Of course, much of this is subjective and open to philosophical debate, which by the experienced tone of your post suggests that you already know, but being highly distributed is clearly a viable modality today, compared to where it was only a few years ago.

And the larger players need to be able to address this growing niche, lest they lose out on a growing number of sales. All IMO, of course.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
