The north-American Native Americans had no concept of land ownership so, of course they had no fixed territory. Yes, they fought with each other over hunting grounds but, this for the use of said territory and not ownership. It was a matter of feeding their families. When the "white eyes" came along professing that they were going to own the land or, already had been granted title to it, the NAs could not understand what these crazy people were talking about. Also, I don't feel that the western invasion of the white man left both sides better off. Aside from the encarceration of NAs on non productive reservations where they could not feed themselves and were controlled by unscrupulous indian agents that provided them putrid meat and weevilly grain, please consider the other legacies they received--numerous diseases for which they had no immunity, total destruction of their natural food supply, degradation of their women, alcoholism, and being stripped of their honor and pride in self accomplishment. It is only recently that some of the tribes have been able to find ways back to self-reliance. Alcoholism is still one of the main problems among them because, according to scientific research ( by who, I don't know) NAs are #2 among ethnic groups in susceptability to addiction to alcohol. Those tribes that adapted well early, such as the Cherokees and other victims of the trail of tears were very few in number and they had had much earlier contact with the whites. We can't undo what's been done but, the NAs don't think they are better off. The condition of the continent has been decimated also. Regards, truedog BTW, #1 for alcoholism are the Irish.
