That's why I'm only "tempted" to short CMGI. People seem to be very much in favor of the Alta Vista investment, as though this will make CMGI and all its net holdings a portal of sorts. I can't help but see three negatives: 1. CMGI may not have the marketing skill to compete the portal arena. 2. Alta Vista will have to shed its image as "just" a search engine. 3. It will be a major feat of cross-company coordination to merge separate CMGI holdings into a single portal. But people love CMGI, in spite of what I think. And I'm convinced if I go short in the absence of a general internet downturn, I will lose my shirt. The temptation is there, though. -Eric
