That's why I'm only "tempted" to short CMGI. People seem to be very much in
favor of the Alta Vista investment, as though this will make CMGI and all its net
holdings a portal of sorts. I can't help but see three negatives:


I'm not so sure about that, I see Alta Vista more as a means of driving traffic to the individual sites, as opposed to glomming the whole thing together into a Yahoo-like portal. I think the strength of CMGI is still their ability to nurture small startups then kick them out at huge % gains after an IPO. Short them once the IPO market fades (it's not dead yet, see Juniper Networks for evidence).

But people love CMGI, in spite of what I think. And I'm convinced if I go short in
the absence of a general internet downturn, I will lose my shirt. The temptation is
there, though.
