Another Cyrix news that I get from CNNfn (the South Portland fab is not part of the present deal): National Semi sells chip unit Taiwan chip set maker buys PC chip business from National Semiconductor June 30, 1999: 10:59 a.m. ET TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's Via Technologies confirmed Wednesday it was buying National Semiconductor's PC microprocessor business. Ted Lee, sales and marketing chief at the Taiwan chip set maker, said a review of the Cyrix business left him convinced it was a viable despite having to compete directly with the world's dominant central-processing unit maker Intel Corp (INTC). "We are not afraid to compete directly with Intel," Lee said. "We have had many fights with Intel before. Actually our president, Chen Wen-chi, used to be a CPU designer at Intel. "Despite the tough competition with Intel, we will continue to develop the Cyrix line," Lee said. Details sketchy Lee refused to put a value on the purchase, saying that some details of the deal remained sketchy. Further details would be given in due course, he added. Lee said Via Tech would raise T$10 billion ($309) to finance the deal in the second half, issuing rights shares and overseas convertible bonds. The deal with National Semiconductor (NSM) includes the transfer of Cyrix chip research and development and marketing but no microchip manufacturing capacity, although Via confirmed it was among the bidders for National's CPU plant in South Portland, Maine. Lee said the deal would not affect Via Technologies' relationships with other microchip makers, though it was not clear what would become of its license to create chip sets based on Intel Pentium chips. The accord involves only National Semiconductor's x86 line of Cyrix chips - central processing chips that are compatible with Intel's Pentium line. National will retain its Colorado design center, where it will continue to develop its Cyrix MediaGX line of special-use CPUs. Copyright 1999 Reuters. All rights reserved.
