Penni, could you supply me with the full sentence? It would be easier to answer that if I could see the word in full context. Thanks.

Joan

Once upon a time it was fashionable for UT students
to have an orange-and-white The University decal
on the rear windows of their cars.

Baylor students responded with a higher calling of
uppitiness with green-and-gold Thee University decals.

Rambi --

Should this paper which you are proofing be destined for on campus consumption, I will suggest that the most safe course of action is to use capitals for ALL the letters, not just the "u".

Being from the Great State of Texas, I've dealt with teasips all of my life, have a daughter and a daughter in law who were graduated from the stellar educational place, and know that my advice is in the best interest of your student.

Austin, for those who might not know, is
The Center of The Universe
and is home to
THE UNIVERSITY of TEXAS
aka
T U

One needs to keep this in mind in all dealings with teasips and teasip u, for not to do so, will bring forth wrath, hatred, and even threat of eternal damnation from the teasip parties involved.

My initial judgement of the student you mentioned is that he is probably a transfer from some other u.
That being the case, his conditional acceptance is in dire straits, as he is not granting the university the proper respect of the capital U status in his report.

However, if the paper is for usage on the outside, that is anywhere other than
The Center of The Universe,
then the small u should be acceptable.

I remember the Baylor retort that has been mentioned .

Another I found amusing was one from SMU a number of years ago.
The card section, as I recall at a football game between SMU and T U, kept repeating the same message ...
" The University " ....
after a while the SMUers came back with this message from their card section ...
"Our maid went to school there, too"

Respectfully,

Nemer

Personally I like Nemer's response, yet for another reason.

Everything is bigger in Texas.

However, when in Rome do as the Romans do:
