Someone asked for this. Fez ____________________________Dell Chairman Sees Overseas Growth By JIM VERTUNO .c The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Dell Computer Corp., the nation's largest direct seller of computers, can grow considerably overseas over the next few years, Chairman Michael Dell says. ''In Europe, we have a business that's roughly $6 billion in size,'' Dell said Wednesday night. ''Essentially, in the United Kingdom, we're pretty much tied for No. 1. We actually have more market share in the U.K. than we do in the U.S. Our models work better there than in the U.S.'' The company, which sells a majority of its computers to businesses, governments and other public institutions, reported revenues exceeding $5.5 billion in the fiscal quarter that ended in April, up 41 percent from a year ago. The company reported that sales through its Web site surpassed $18 million per day during the quarter, accounting for 30 percent of overall revenue. ''The interesting thing to me is that we've been able to continue growth at a very elevated rate even in a mature, supposedly competitive market,'' Dell said. He made those comments during a studio interview broadcast nationwide from the offices of the Edward Jones brokerage firm. The interviews with business executives allow Edward Jones' mostly middle- and upper-middle class investors to ask questions of the people leading the companies in which they're considering investing. The personal computer market remains very strong and Dell Corp. continues to expect strong sales domestically and overseas, its chairman said. ''The PC business to me looks like it's alive and thriving. We have a 10 percent market share globally. We think we can grow that considerably over the next several years,'' he said. ''We've seen very, very strong growth in (overseas) markets. Asia without Japan is growing much faster than the U.S. Europe is growing slower than the U.S.'' Dell said the company's European division alone is about the size the entire operation was about three and half years ago. ''If Dell didn't exist in the U.S., Dell Europe would be an incredible success story but it kind of gets overshadowed by the growth that continues in the U.S.,'' he said.
