NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--S3 Inc. (SIII) shares soared 20% after the company said said its second-quarter earnings would likely come in far better than Wall Street's expectations.

The graphics chip maker said early Thursday that it would post earnings somewhere between a loss of 5 cents a share to break-even. Wall Street had expected a loss of 20 cents a share, according to First Call.

In an interview with Dow Jones earlier this week, S3 Chief Executive Officer Ken Potashner said the company has won "broad-based acceptance" for its Savage 4 chip. The company's products are in desktop computers made by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) and others. A year ago, the company had no design wins, he said.

"The market looks good, with lots of volumes in the mid- to low end" of the PC market, Potashner said. "We are seeing a lot of growth as a result.

The company plans to introduce graphics chips for laptop computers by the fourth quarter. S3 has already secured some design wins for those products, but hasn't announced them yet, he said.

Potashner said S3 is taking market share, "predominantly from ATI" Technologies Inc. (ATYT).

The company is covered by only a few analysts on Wall Street, but Potashner said "a couple of firms" should begin following the stock soon.

S3 shares rose 1 23/32, or 18.9%, to 10 13/16
