JVC is coming out with a D-VHS this fall, and it uses a codec...................... asiansources.com Tech Talk Posted: July 5, 1999 JVC's digital VCR records satellite TV programs JAPAN — Victor Co. of Japan (JVC) has announced the mid-July release of its latest digital VHS(D-VHS) VCR, which is designed to record programs of SkyPerfecTV, a digital satellite broadcast service. Initially priced at $1,057.59, the unit is connected to a set-top box through an IEEE1394 interface and uses MPEG2STD mode. It enables a maximum transmission speed of 14.1Mbps for the D-VHS system. Data is encrypted and transmitted from the set-top box to the VCR for decoding and recording. An electronic program guide (EPG) enables easy control, thus a user can make a recording reservation by clicking an EPG picture on the remote control. The VCR can hold up to 1,300 taped data units that record program titles while recording the programs. A D-VHS VCR with MPEG-2 coding and decoding is scheduled for release later this year. The product will allow users to digitally record terrestrial analog broadcasts, the firm said. JVC also plans to develop a product that can record HDTV programs with a maximum transmission speed of 28.2Mbps.
