Hitachi, Acer to to use joint-venture for DVD production

TAIWAN — Hitachi, in effort to compete better in the global DVD player market, announced it is modifying an existing joint venture project with Taiwan's Acer Peripherals to fit export DVD player production. The joint venture, which currently produces major home electronic entertainment appliances, was established in July 1998 and had been producing DVD players, if only for the Asian market: It will now focus on DVD players aimed for the United States and European markets.

Panasonic, Toshiba and Sony currently maintain the largest share in the market, and Hitachi is trying to get into the game.

By 2002, the international DVD player market is expected to total 10 million players, the bulk of the demand to come from North America — 2.6 million — and Europe — 1.2 million. Japan consumers are expected to buy 800,000 players.
