Domestic DVD demand predicted to double

TAIWAN — Domestic market demand for DVD players has increased by nearly 100 percent this year, with manufacturers estimating sales to reach 100,000 sets.

With price levels dropping and local makers offering their own brand name models, the island's consumers are warming toward DVD technology. A total of 50,000 DVD players were sold in Taiwan last year, up substantially from the 10,000 sets recorded in 1997.

Local manufacturers, including Esonic Technology Corp., Acer Inc., Royal Information Electronics Co. Ltd, Tatung Co., Sampo Corp., and Teco Electric & Machinery Co. Ltd, offered DVD players using Japanese components under their own brand names last year. Due to recent local innovations in DVD component technology, makers will be able to begin using local components in the third quarter this year, bringing costs down. Average prices come in around $600 per set on average. But Tatung, for instance, offers a highly affordable DVD player at around $200.
