I find that when the children are particularly annoying, one way to get some peace and quiet is to tell them to clean their rooms. They go into their rooms, close the doors, and read or play quietly.

They are good about gathering up dirty laundry and dishes if requested, but every so often we do insist that they clean their rooms, completely, about once a month. That causes conniption fits and histrionics, but eventually it gets done. The older is getting better at it. And I do get a little help with the chores, e.g., they will wash the dishes or sweep the floors or clear the dining room table if asked.
