I hand-set type for a weekly newspaper for over a year. A big sloped wooden case, a handheld typeholder, backward setting (easy for me, I started off mirror writing,) hand justifying, transferring to the pageforms on a block, distributing type, sorting pie, setting bogus (you know setting bogus or were you in a scab shop -- hmm -- Tulane sounds like a scab shop to me) etc. My great grandfather was a master typographer -- could carve matrices, cut and cast type (like B. Franklin). A wandering alcoholic he worked from town to town as he felt like it, but could always get a job because he was fast and had an ITU card.
