Gene,

RE:Jefferson's comments about the Whiskey Rebellion are also worth pondering. Very 60's

I think I recall the piece [darn books...I know it's in the bookcase somewhere..."cntrol F" isn't worth a damn on paper products...your referring to and "very 60's" is quite a good characterization.

When I pick up a book and read the founding fathers I am in awe over their abilities. I can read a paragraph that is so profound that I'll have to put the book down for a few minutes just to savor the thought. Unfortunately, this is something that is quite absent in today's political rhetoric filled with one line hyperbole.

The formation of a government with the codification of liberties was no easy task and the founders seemed to know that far better than we seem to appreciate. While each of the founders had strong opinions they also seemed to have significant doubts that what they had created would last.

I do believe (though seemingly an unpopular view) that despite the occasional blips that will inevitably occur throughout our history, we do have a federal and state government(s) that work quite well and our liberties are preserved. Over time our liberties have not been infringed upon, or taken away, but rather have been reaffirmed.

Yes, "we" whine about unfair taxes and "government incompetencies", but we also whine about not enough vacation, underpaid, underappreciated, etc. We are a country of whiners and I have yet to hear from anyone what is a fair tax system; it seems more on the order of I should pay less and you should pay more. But if we take a moment to look around...the state of life in this country is pretty darn good; even our level of poverty is higher than the medium income in many countries. The government can rightly take credit for the real improvements in the environment, e.g., immense improvement in the Great Lakes, air quality; the internet was largely born out of government efforts/funding of DARPANET....With a small amount of effort I think each of us could site examples of the large successes instead of the examples of the relatively small failures.

Ooops...I better relate this to the DELL thread...Something I look forward to in technology advancement is the day we have enough computing power, 3D technology, and AI that someone can "capture" the thought processes of the founding fathers in such a manner that we could engage in a virtual 3D rendered/conversation with Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, et al, over political issues.

Feeling pretty fortunate to be an American,
Jim
