Personally, I rather doubt that affirmative action has had much, if anything, to do with creating the problem. A more likely culprit -- if there is one -- might be "progressive education," which has been around since the days of John Dewey. There have been plenty of private progressive schools. I personally am older than the baby-boomers, as well as the Generation-Xers, yet I attended two of them in my day. One was even called "Manumit." The kids were so "manumitted" that by the time they reached 9th grade (the top grade in the school) they couldn't even do simple fractions. Progressive education has had its positive side. But the negative side is still with us, in the form of principles like "learning should always be fun," "learn by doing, not by rote," "let children learn at their own pace," etc. If applied in moderation, these principles make sense. But when were Americans ever moderate about anything? <g> jbe
