From my digging at the following site (I have little real knowledge of physics to understand what I found), I realize that gold probably will not change into iron after being nuked, but maybe Platinum? Mercury? webelements.com ... Looking into his bowl of water (or worse mercury) that might have looked like iron to someone from his time.
