Benny,

FYI I just saw an advertisement for Wingspan Bank on my local cable network. EBPP was prominently displayed as a feature. Between TBFC and Wingspan, you can't get away from ads for Internet Banks.

Dave

<<Maybe Rob C. or zuma could plan something for Saturday??? "Golf Carts in Brooklyn?" >>

OT -- Hi folks...Had a MAJOR meltdown with my (formerly) trusty NEC desktop machine on Friday. I am now THOROUGHLY, 100% convinced that Transpoint will fail miserably, if, in fact, the EBPP game boils down to good ol' customer service, a la Microsoft...

I made a HUGE mistake trying to upgrade to Windows 98 (with the intent of then being able to install USB ports to hook up a new scanner, etc.). Well, in the last .00000001% of the install process (which took over an hour), the thing froze solid... Startup disk recovery failed -- could only get to a DOS prompt...

To make matters worse, I called MS technical support on Sat AM, and was promptly billed $35 bucks for them to listen to the problem that THEY caused, 'fer cryin' out loud... Then -- the topper -- they had me do a "uninstall" procedure that totally wiped out the file system for my 6 GB harddrive.

Now, not only can't I get into Windows, but I can't access any data whatsoever... I was absolutely beside myself, although I was lucky enough to have made backups of all my critical files. Sheesh -- what a great way to begin a holiday weekend...

Well, as all good Monopolistic Overlord companies do, this unpleasant experience of course forced my hand to run into the city on Saturday to buy a new box (laptop, this time around) with Windows 98 pre-installed. On a more positive note, let me just say that the IBM Thinkpads ROCK (I picked up a 600E 366mhz machine), and would highly recommend them to anyone...(and thanks, Checkfree, for allowing me to ramp up the budget for this baby, 'cause they sure ain't cheap!)

Anyway -- back to Benny's original post (now that I'm all hooked up again). I've been speaking to Ron and Capt Tony (also a New Yorker), and we'll hopefully get together this week to plan some weekend activities. Don't know about the golf carts, but we might be able to do horse & buggy races down fifth avenue or something...

Seriously, though -- I was wondering what folks interests are for Saturday. Perhaps one of the following:

--Tickets to a "mainstream" broadway show. Could be expensive though ($75 bucks or better per ticket), especially for a group...Maybe this is best left for individuals to book on their own for Sunday.

--Tickets for an off Broadway show. Two that come to mind are "Blue Man Group" (absolutely hysterical avant-garde comedy down in the village), and "Chicago City Limits," which is an improvisational comedy group (and only $20 bucks a ticket).

--Circle line tour. Wonderful, three hour excursion by boat around Manhattan. And, it's been certified as August West - safe. Lots of beer and no golf carts (although we may have to fortify the wooden railings a bit, I think). Leave the fishing poles at home, though, folks...

Anyway -- I've gotta go right now (my fridge also died last week, the new one's coming sometime this AM). I know Ron is working on some hotel ideas, and I'm hopeful we can pull together some tentative plans by the end of the week.
