Yes, I was too young for the draft. But no member of my family has ever refused or failed to be inducted in war time, and I would not have been the first to fail to answer the call. The Bush story is disturbing because he got right in even though others had to wait. We actually have a tradition in my family of joining during war time. My Grandfather was wounded in France in World War One, and tried to enlist in an army combat unit in World War Two, but was rejected due to age. My father enlisted in the army DURING the Korean War. My cousin was a marine, and was killed. Are we all stupid for doing this? I cannot accept that people who would lead us as Commanders-in-chief do not have the character of the men in my family I tell my children stories about.
