Thread, regarding the SI beta test, I have found what may be a HUGE drawback. In VSI (Vintage Silicon Investor), you were able to go to a poster's profile and see their last 100 posts. In the new version, you are only able to see the last 20, which might be just the last day. It was extremely useful to see a poster's prior comments, and what threads they frequented, as it helped establish the credibility of the individual. If one of you has found a way around this, please share.

Oh, I've found that some of you have not enabled private messaging on the beta site, though it is active on VSI. Apparently the two versions are not synchronized with regard to the PM options.

Frank

SXB:

Don't want to intrude on Uncle's territory, but perhaps you'd like to step up to the plate and make the case for VISX here on this thread.

As it happens, I am familiar with their product and the potential market. Their lasers correct nearsightedness, among other maladies. Having had my eyesight restored from 20:800 to 20:30, I am a fan. But you should mention that this market was expected to "take off" about 4 years ago, and has been slow to emerge. Maybe you can help us understand why.

To SXB, RE: VISX...... I am a Doctor of Optometry by profession and am quite familiar with Visx and Summit Tech. If you will check further you will find that a major part of their income is derived from a royalty that is paid by the Ophtalamologist doing the surgery, to them for each eye they operate on. Last time I checked it is on the order of $250 per eye which is why the surgeries are not going to come down in price anytime too soon. The FTC has a problem with this and as well as Doctors are looking at other Excimer Laser alternatives from other companies, so their monopoly may not last that much longer. You may well want to watch these events closely. I will send additional info in a few days but am out of town away from my desk right now.
