<so their monopoly may not last>

Nobody said the monopoly would last. The FTC LOST the case and is appealing. The day the FTC lost, VISX went up 17 points, 6 weeks ago. The day FTC filed an appeal, VISX went up 6 points.
Tell me something, why would doctors not opt for other machines, such as Nidek, Summit - they don't have to pay for any royalty. Why do they complain and continue to shell out 250 bucks to VISX? Because, there is a factor of 'trust' in the business, and VISX has won that trust. Not to mention, their technology is much superior to others.
Consumers DEMAND VISX. I will, when I use a fraction of my VISX gains to choose a VISX-based eye surgery this fall.

Best.
