General Instrument Makes Strategic Investment in @Home Solutions

HORSHAM, Pa., and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE:
GIC - news) and Excite@Home (Nasdaq: ATHM - news) today announced that General Instrument will join
@Home Solutions, Excite@Home's recently formed venture that offers turnkey, fully-managed and comprehensive
broadband cable Internet services to small and medium-sized cable operators and systems, as a strategic technology
partner and investor. General Instrument will invest in the joint venture to help speed the deployment of broadband
services to the estimated 15 million homes and businesses passed by small and mid-sized cable operators.

''This investment demonstrates GI's commitment to the high-speed data-over- cable market,'' said Dan Moloney,
Senior Vice President and General Manager of GI's Advanced Network and Telecom Systems. ''Our investments in
@Home Solutions and the company's marketing activities will reinforce GI's position as a leading supplier of
DOCSIS-based cable modems. They will benefit from our dual-return DOCSIS-based SURFboard® cable modem,
which is ideal for the smaller cable systems that may not yet be two-way activated. The modem offers 100% market
coverage on 'Day 1' by allowing either RF return or telco return path in the same product.''

''We are thrilled to have General Instrument join forces with Excite@Home as a strategic investor in @Home
Solutions,'' said Dean A. Gilbert, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Excite@Home. ''GI's
involvement in @Home Solutions will provide a tremendous boost to our plans to deliver Web-based broadband
services to small and mid-sized cable systems - reducing the digital divide between metropolitan and rural markets.''

Under the terms of the agreement, General Instrument will collaborate with @Home Solutions cable affiliates to
address the financial and technical challenges associated with deploying residential and commercial cable-based
Internet services to small and mid-sized markets. @Home Solutions will extend the current Excite@Home model,
which complements the existing operations of cable operators, by providing services such as financing of cable and
network equipment, expanded customer service, billing services, service installation, and marketing support. As part
of the agreement, GI will be a preferred technology provider, offering its CableLabs Certified(TM) SURFboard
SB2100 cable modem and the SB2100D dual-return modem to the venture.
