Thanks for the imput.......very detailed and organized.......Technology still doesnt make you successful on the net.......Reaching the masses does......then hopefully your product upon visual contact will get the viewer to want to find out more....

so, i totally agree with you about traffic.......What is going to drive the traffic to the site.......as i have stated earlier....even though the interet is in its infancy, traffic generation is not......

Contests are a great idea....but very costly if their is no sponsorship....but you still have the problem of getting your contest noticed.....

Buy impressions???? But which web site fits your target audience..???

Billboard advertising??? Has it been done before? I think this is a great idea but you need a catchy name....more on this later...

Radio Advertising:...talk about having to be twice as creative as you usually are......but super avenue....

target marketing..: Brochure that is dispursed to consumers in related fields.....great idea, but if you can isolate this to computer users in that related field and find a purveyor who will allow you to utilize their database.

The above is in re: to contests.....

Gift certificates: Hire yourself a designer.....Their a dime a dozen....work pretty cheap also.....If you dont know where to look, go to your local printer and ask them for a free lancer......Give that person your vision....let them go to work on it......also, if you find a great looking gift certificate......utilize someone else's work to better your own....dont steal the whole idea but make it better and more unique....

what to do with the gift certificates upon completion.......Use them to barter for billboards, radio and all sorts of mediums that allow you to create an historical pattern that will give you statistics as to which medium works best.......make them part of the contest in fact......

enough for now.....mike

Some Internet companies won't have to be visible to succeed. They'll be the technology behind other company's success.

Perhaps this discussion should take two different directions...

1) Those companies geared towards the retail consumer on the net. The specific strategies they should focus on and the known barriers to entry they will face.

2) Those that are core support businesses, helping to build the backends and storefronts of the internet. Technology oriented business that needs to be concerned with innovation and product development to bring it on faster, more efficiently and cheaper. What should the focus be for those business models?

Excellent thread...I love strategy discussion
