Nihil. Listen up.

1) I was talking about graduate school, and graduate school only.

2) I have gotten fellowships and travel grants -- but exclusively from private foundations. Ford Foundation, Danforth Foundation, MacArthur Foundation. That sort of thing.

3) I have retired from the VOA (must remember to update my profile!). When I worked for the VOA, I did travel. But what else do you expect a foreign correspondent to do? Sit at home?

4) Even when I worked for the VOA, I often travelled at MY OWN EXPENSE, simply because I wanted to keep up to date with my areas of interest. At the same time, I used much of the material I collected for radio reports, which means I WAS NOT PAID FOR IT.

5) You have an exaggerated idea of the amount of money showered on support for government employees, anyway. For example, you should have seen the library at VOA. What a joke! And no internet access! Since it was important for me to have subscriptions to Russian newspapers, books, etc., I PAID FOR IT ALL MYSELF.

Enough?
