A pretty compelling number. Give them a per subscriber worth of $4000 and we are headed to a market cap of $80 billion or a per share price of about $300. How long will it take to get those people hooked up?

Could someone on this thread try and answer this in laymans terms for me. The question is how did you or they, whoever they are come up with each subscriber is worth 4 thousand each. I know I'm off base the way that I'm thinking but at "forty dollars a month" it would take 100 months to give this to the company. We all know that @home after taxes, T, expenses, ect. probably gets, what 5 to 12 dollars net.

Please jump all over me on this and make me a believer as I am long, but am considering selling remaining shares.

Regards

RG

<<A video clip I hadn't heard of before. Go to the video clips section here and watch the one on ATHM. 20 million people are on the waiting list for an install. >>

Completely meaningless. I'm on that list, along with most of my friends. But it is doubtful we will get service within the next several years, instead opting for DSL, satellite, wireless, etc.

ATHM - and the cable partners - simply aren't delivering on their promises. The susbscriber rates are MUCH lower than what management was telling the street a year ago, and it is becoming clear they won't meet estimates going forward. That is why the stock is struggling, and is badly lagging the internet sector.

>Go to the video clips section here and watch the one on ATHM. 20 million people are on the waiting list for an install<

Thanks for the info, unfortunately because of all the pauses due to what real player calls "net congestion" it's almost impossible to watch even with a 50k connection.

It's always been my contention that getting the sub's wouldn't be as hard as actually getting all the people that WANT the service hooked up in a timely manner.

>How long will it take to get those people hooked up?<
Speaking for myself, here in the metro St. Louis, (Illinois side) area TCI has already delayed twice and now says to not expect Internet service until after the first of the year.

If we can EVER get out from under of this damn "open access" issue (which IMHO is a completely bogus argument from AOL & GTE) we should explode upwards.

How long will it take to get those people hooked up?

Let's see:

Subscriber growth has been limited by the MSO partners ability to pull new cable. 130,000 new subscriptions per quarter (roughly 520,000 a year) is the currrent growth rate; at that rate it will take approximately 38 years to complete the 20 million installations. However the new backbone, which goes online in August, is only designed for 5 million users.

The good news is that Compusa, Dell, and compaq can sell cable modem ready PC's now. Perhaps we'll soon see an acceleration of the growth rate.

I just saw the video clip:

ATHM's is expecting an increase in subscriber growth rates starting between the first and third quarters of next year as cable ready pc's are readied for retail distribution. What they call the "self install" regime. It's about time. Let's hope the MSOs can string cable a little faster to keep up.

Other interesting points regarding AOL.

In previous talks regarding granting AOL access to ATHM's network the MSO's and ATHM were amenable to this if AOL helped to pay for a portion of the infrastructure costs and for ATHM to "get it's pound of flesh" from any broadband AOL users. In other words to participate in the revenues generated from an AOL broadband user. AOL refused.

On a related subject - not part of Bell's comments.

In ATHM's latest filing they mention they're working with compaq, compusa, and Dell to provide cable ready PC's. I quickly scanned the dell sight and it looked like you could order a cable ready pc now. Could that be just for some selected MSOs?
