I can't speak for foundations and universities, but I think most of them would probably argue that they give more to society than they receive indirectly from the government, through tax-deductible contributions. And what about all the employment they provide? Are you figuring all that into your calculations?

Another point. One of the big arguments of conservatives (yes, I know you aren't one of those) is that private philanthropy should be allowed to do more, and government less. Well, private philanthropy would probably not do it at all, if contributions were not tax-deductible.

So nobody does it. Not government. Not private philanthropists. Close the schools, the colleges, the universities down.

How is that going to benefit the "taxpayers"?
