Discussion? On this thread? What we have here is usually the equivalent of a food fight- with ideas. Everyone ends up dirty and looking a little bit silly but it's lots of fun.

I don't quite agree with X here, Achilles, although she does have a point. <g>

(Food fight with ideas, hah! Ahhahaha...Funny!....)

Sometimes it is like that. But very few folks here are preaching a "doctrine." And although they may feel very strongly about certain matters under discussion, on other issues they have tentative opinions, or no real opinion at all. So there is a certain amount of give-and-take, and people actually are capable of letting themselves be convinced, or at least semi-convinced, by someone else. (Not Terrence, though.)

I would be perfectly willing to discuss ideas or even feelings (shudder!) with you, but FT has monopolized the conversation. I would suggest that you give him a wide berth, but he has his supporters.

I'm out of NY and in Seattle, (and I understand the timing was great, as the weather here is perfect right now, not even raining, for a change) and I only have time to dip into SI for a moment now and then; but I do want to say something to you about that odd feeling of there being no real reciprocity when you argue with Terrence, because I've been through it myself.

You will never be able to figure it out; all you can figure out is that he is, in fact, "pursuing an interchange for reasons other than a free and frank exchange of views."

And once you have that clear, you won't feel disappointed any more.

Why he is here, is something of which a mystery is made, though not an interesting one.

He can be funny, sometimes. The Objectivist James Barrett. But really -- don't try to engage with FT seriously. He will become a cloud bank; it's his way; and for him, it's the best way.
