Actually my post to Terence was written rather quickly and did not successfully communicate my tone, which was supposed to be 'mock indignant'. But I agree, it's the give and take that's the important thing (my word-du-jour is reciprocity). Also tolerable in posting partners is competitiveness, which I would identify as another important social motivation. In posting we are often trying to out do one another in cleverness. We have nothing to gain except the satisfaction of showing ourselves to have outdone our competitor, who hopefully will return the favour. Which brings us back to reciprocity.
