Kids Tell Pollsters Ketchup is Favorite Traditional Hot Dog Topping; But if Moms Weren't Watching, They'd Top Dogs With Chocolate Sauce! Wednesday June 30, 5:40 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: National Hot Dog and Sausage Councilbiz.yahoo.com WASHINGTON, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- A poll of more than 200 children visiting Washington, DC, tourist attractions showed that ketchup remains the most popular hot dog topping in the under-16 age group by a two to one margin. Of the 219 children surveyed June 22 by National Hot Dog and Sausage Council staff, 143 said they liked ketchup on their hot dogs. Sixty-three children said they either preferred mustard or liked mustard along with their ketchup. Seventeen children said they liked relish or cheese, while 11 said they liked chili, 10 said they preferred onions and another 10 said they preferred their wieners in that classic kid-style: plain. But, when asked what they would like on their hot dogs if their moms weren't watching, a whopping 43 kids said they'd like to try chocolate sauce, while another 18 said ice cream might be tasty. Peanut butter was the choice of twelve children, while eight said pepperoni, seven said caramel, six said M & Ms® and five said pineapple. Some of the more rebellious youth surveyed claimed they'd like to try their hot dogs topped with tarantulas, bugs, slime or even Teletubbies®. Ballparks were the favorite hot-dog eating venue among kids, with home a close second and picnics coming in third. ``What our survey clearly told us is that kids love hot dogs because they facilitate their natural creative instincts,'' said NHDSC Vice President of Public Affairs Janet Riley. ``Today's young children don't want their palates restricted when it comes to one of their favorite foods. While a 'chocolate sundae dog' might not sell among adults, it likely would be a hit among kids.'' Children from 28 states were represented in the survey. Foreign tourists from Guatemala and Belgium also joined in the fun. The data was collected just prior to July's National Hot Dog Month. According to the Council, Americans will eat seven billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. On the Fourth of July weekend alone, Americans are expected to eat 150 million hot dogs.
