July 06, 1999 13:20 Motorola wireless unit to hire 1,400 people ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 6 (Reuters) - Motorola Inc.'s wireless communications unit, which makes cellular infrastructure and digital wireless systems, said Tuesday it would hire 1,400 people to speed development of its wireless Internet devices. Motorola's wireless unit said the positions in engineering, research and development will help Motorola bring to market the first Internet-based wireless network allowing users to access the Internet, send e-mail and faxes, and watch video over a wireless network. The wireless communications unit already employs 16,000 people worldwide, a spokeswoman said. The new positions would be at various Motorola operations around the world. Motorola linked up with Cisco Systems Inc. in February to develop wireless Internet service, and the two companies said they would invest up to $1 billion on the project over the next four to five years. "Plans for (Motorola's wireless Internet) network will enable a network operator to include data, voice and video services over a single wireless network, giving users instant access to voicemail, e-mail, fax and video conferencing anywhere in the world," Motorola's wireless unit said in a statement. Shares of Motorola were up 1/16 at 98-3/8.
