<Excuse me for being a bit sensitive on the issue. But folks in the military do some very thankless jobs and take great risks in the service of our country. Richard's comments must be taken to task and exposed for the BS that they are.>
Excuse me for being sensitive on the issue, but the police state abuses in that area are flatly out of hand. While my mother was in her last 6 months of life, fully armed Marines crossed her yard (inside a small town in NM not far from El Paso) AFTER DARK.
Did those jerks have full IR and night vision as was reported by every news media?
If so, how could mistake one boy with 12 goats and a dog for drug runners?
Why are they daily crossing people's land with-out permission, or warrant.
The Texas Rangers have given notice to the Marines on cutting fence and crossing land with-out warrant. It was posted in the Dallas Morning News 9 months or so ago. Private property means just that, private land. El Paso News reported over 75 head of cattle goats & sheep had been lost onto public roads through these actions. They were speaking out against these intrusive practices due to traffic accidents caused livestock near the border.
Texas Monthly also wrote 3 articles against Marine abuses in the border area. You should also note the writings of Congressman Ron Paul in that time frame.

You even been in that area Ron? Do you like the checkpoints and vehicle searches on the highways? Do you agree with demanding old people get from their cars in 120 degree heat? Is it right they cross peoples yards inside a town 75 mi from the border after dark just to get into the national forest more quickly?

Should we even talk about the number of mule deer found lying dead with 5.56 Nato FMJ bullets in them with-in 100 miles of the border?
