The counter-attack is just starting - very late in the day - but there many unknowns here - for example just how much gold has been leased out already? And are we going to see defaults in repayments? Also, it is just as speculative to say that there has been a conspiracy to support the price of gold as to argue the contrary position - you simply don't know that. The B of E has mismanaged the auctions - horrendously - the loss in the value of it's reserves makes a mockery of its contention that it wishes to make a better return on its holdings - it would take decades to make up the losses it has suffered since the announcement. All of this is grist for the mill for the opponents of the Blair Government. Congress is likely to kill the IMF sales, and the spotlight will turn to the Swiss. d
