I'm just trying to determine the extent and duration of the current trends.

Aren't we all? :-)

If your question is specific to the Equipment sector, then there's 2 key drivers of growth for those companies.

1. Technology
2. Capacity.

Technology drivers permit chipmakers to improve their productivity and / or do things that they simply couldn't do before the enabling technology existed. Revenue is generated for the equipment makers supplying that enabling technology.

Capacity drivers cause chipmakers to buy more equipment because they have to process more wafers to satisfy demand.

If the current round of technology buys which are taking the leading edge to 0.18µ and below, Cu, CMP, PSM overlaps with the 300mm buildout, then this will probably be the mother of all up legs.

If it doesn't, then we may see a relatively short down leg in between this up leg and the 300mm one.

JMHO,
Ian.

OT I know there are some true experts on this thread and I am hoping someone could explain to me why Tower Semiconductor is not participating in this rally. Everything I read seems to indicate that capacity at foundries are tightening up and pricing is increasing and yet the stock of TOwer continiues to languish despite a very strong cash position. I am mystified.
