i agree also, starowl.

and let me say right away that i am not in any sense opposed to change. nothing about change disturbs me or frightens me.

that having been said, i think that the appearance of the beta version is cluttered, unoriginal, and without distinction. piling on features and drop down menus and folders and options and frames and toolbar customizations is just that... piling on.

as you indicated with your "sigh", i too am saddened that this change has to take place. there is a lot to be said for being streamlined. and for not running full tilt after the new and improved brass ring.

when i hear the current SI format referred to as original, i can't think of a better description. the beta version? definitely a "project" created by a "committee". and we all know the definition of a committee... that place where ideas go to die.

wish it wasn't so.

:)

<<From my subjective viewpoint, the original SI has a distinctive look that sets it apart from Yahoo and the myriad of similar sites. The beta, in my view, is cluttered and impersonal. It lacks character and is cold and drab.>>

I am trying to be objective also. I am all for making changes in order to better an idea, but I just don't see that in this case. I think that many of the new tools and added features are great, but why change the look? The look has a sense of character and I think is ahead of its time. Though I hate to make a comparison, one of the reasons AOL does so well is because their site has such a unique and futuristic environment. It is not like going to the YHOO homepage. It is more like a nice software program you would buy @ a store, nice and plush. SI has that same feel. When AOL upgrades their software, they keep the same look while adding to it. Most web sites have a look of the early 90's, click on this word and go to this link. Boring....! We are entering a new era. Y2K, with 3D and broadband galore! I say, lets step it up boys with this new site not step it back. Unfortunately, that is what the beta site is doing.
