>>why would i dump another $100 in rdram into a box<<

skeeter,
see, if you wait a while the price will come down. earlier this evening the add on price was $300. now 2 hours later it is already down to $100. by tomorrow lunch, you should be able to get your rdram-d in a happy meal box, free!

as a republican i am loathe to use a clintonism and please do not be offended.

the reason we will all pay more for rambus rdram-d??

it is the speed, stupid!

<why would i dump another $100 in rdram into a box that i can only sell for $50 more.>

Maybe it's the same reason people pay for 550 MHz Pentium III boxes, even if going with the 500 MHz Pentium III would cost $200 less and be about 5-9% slower.

dell ... guess what? ..... how much have they lost? $0.00.
You forget the design cost. It takes a bunch of people to design.

More important is the opportunity cost. Each system they gear up to sell means that there was another system that they did not have the resources to design. Dell is unlikely to risk having stuff nobody wants when they could have introduced a bunch of traditional designs.
