John,

Trafficmaster uses an infra red camera on flyover motorway bridges and some smart software to detect traffic lanes slowing to 30 mph,

Not just motorways - huge numbers of trafficmaster sensors are appearing on "A" roads throughout the UK.

They read the car numberplates with an infra-red camera, then discard the first and last digits before correlating the numbers with those from nearby sensors (ie within a few miles). They are able to take account of cars stopping and turning off the main road in their statistical analysis. I think the data is then handled by a packet radio network run by Vodafone with updates every two or three minutes from each location.

You might like to look at vauxhall.co.uk to see the system in action. Note that I have seen sensors recently installed over a MUCH wider area than the map at the above web site would suggest.

I don't hold any Trafficmaster (yet) as I chose ARMHY instead.
