Of course, any country -- or rather, civilization -- can produce people like the Nazis, and that would have been Freud's response to the question, which was/is asked all the time. The point he was trying to make is that ALL civilizations are constantly in threat of such disruptions.

I don't agree, however, with your apparent thesis that "resource-driven hatreds" are always behind "that kind of evil" (i.e., Nazi barbarism or its equivalents). Smacks too much of economic determinism to me, and implies that the "aggressors" are always the economically deprived. In the case of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, for example, such a generalization simply does not apply.

But maybe I misunderstood you.
