K., exploring the DOE site brought up this summary crosstab of electricity generated by fuel type by year (up to 1997). I interpret it as showing that coal DECREASED from 57% of total energy in 1988 to 53% in 1997 while ngas INCREASED from 9% of total electrical energy in 1988 to 14% in 1997. These trends seem directly opposite to the stats of the newspaper article mentioned in my post #47645 in which DOE total coal burning for electrical generation was said to have increased by 8% in the four years since deregulation while ngas decreased by 5% over the same period. But I've been told that reporters don't browse the web to gather stats, they phone contacts. Anyone willing to call DOE to ask which of these versions is correct? eia.doe.gov
