bill, it is possible that both statistics quotes are accurate. It is possible that coal DECREASED from 57% of total energy in 1988 to 53% in 1997and at the same time DOE total coal burning for electrical generation was said to have increased by 8% in the four years since deregulation. First, we have 2 different time periods, one of 10 years and one of only 4 years (since deregulation) so we aren't comparing apples to apples.

Willing to bet AEP rep is talking about their marketing area while DOE is talking nationwide. Another Gas Turbine plant ready this weekend. This replaces the coal plant whose boiler exploded earlier this year outside of Detroit. They also talk about two other new gas turbine plants they just completed. That's 3 new turbine plants sucking Nat Gas! In fairness I note that CMS is gas biased.
