RTev, How do you feel about public messages going into the trash after reading? To me this is nonintuitive, but since I can't think of any alternatives I am directing this to you.

On the old SI I would read them but they were still in the inbox, one click away. I routinely reply to public messages a while after I read them. Its wierd to have to go to the trash and dig them up, and the threads are too busy to do an eyeball scan and look up something that was for me.

I have no problem with the private messages in the trash (other than the inconsistent delete/trash/remove which I pointed out to bryan), because I put the PMs in the trash. But the publics just go there after you read them.
