Yes, by and large they find that shocking. <g> A friend from CA came and spent a month with me an Alabama. As we drove around, I was waving at people. She asked what I was doing. "Waving". Do you know those people? "No". Ohhhh.

By the end of the month, she was a complete convert. And being one who really gets into the spirit of things, she was not only waving, but hanging out the window and yelling "heeeeey there" and giggling. And she loved to "MOOOOOOOOOOO" at the cows. It never ceased to disappoint her that the cows didn't talk back.

A couple of friends from Tennessee, a big town there, stayed with me for awhile. They never could get used to people "visiting". Ya know, just dropping by. And if you're in the front yard, you can count on. At least one person driving by is going to pull in to pass some time. And whenever I had the tractor down there I had a lot of company. A kid magnet, they are. Being somewhat reclusive by nature, I considered setting up a flag system. White flag means it's cool to stop by today, black flag means "stay away till another day". <g>

The key idea sounds great. Nothing like freaking people out to help them grow.

Actually just a few miles from me there is a canyon (I guess you would call it) with all these ranches and tiny wineries. The street is very narrow and long and winding. I drive down that street and dream all the time. The locals wave just like I belong there. I think what your talking about is less a California problem than a density problem.
